As a fragile developing country, Vietnam was able to weather the challenging global crisis due to swift private-sector catalyzation of digitalization

According to the CIA World Factbook, Vietnam “has a young population, stable political system, commitment to sustainable growth, relatively low inflation, stable currency, strong foreign direct investment inflows, strong manufacturing sectors” and a commitment to continuing its global economic integration.

However, against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, the logistics and supply chain industry was a vital chokepoint that warranted careful management.

One global logistics provider that had expanded to Vietnam in 2018 was one of the pillars of digital transformation at the crucial period when most of the world began shutting down.

At present, the firm—J&T Express (Vietnam)—provides nationwide coverage through network partners at more than 1,900 courier depots, offering regular business services such as postal and courier deliveries comprising not just documents and items but also fresh produce.

During the early days of the pandemic, the firm had responded nimbly with contactless delivery to ensure minimal disruptions. Now, it has expanded its services to supporting the harvesting and transporting of produce, guiding farmers in packing, and teaching them how to upload their agricultural products onto e-commerce sites.

Earlier this year, J&T Express inaugurated the Cu Chi Sorting Center—a facility of about 60,000sqm fitted with smart logistics systems across processing, storage, and delivery. The center is equipped with an automated ‘cross-belt sorter’ that enables automated barcode scanning and package sorting based on destination. It is also equipped with an advanced ‘dimensional measurement, weighing and scanning system’ for sophisticated sorting functions.

According to the firm’s Brand Director, Phan Binh: “As we look back at the journey of J&T Express Vietnam over the past four years, I am both grateful and humbled at how far (we have) come. Looking ahead, I am equally excited for future opportunities to continue bringing the best technology-enabled solutions to customers and businesses tapping into our expanding global network. We remain hopeful and optimistic about the logistics and e-commerce growth of Vietnam and look forward to contributing as a key player.”
