Legacy backup solutions were slowing things down and distracting the firm’s IT team from servicing its core business.

Digitalization is pervading Hong Kong’s only private enterprise providing comprehensive and multi-disciplinary engineering solutions to the entire electricity supply system.

From generation, transmission, distribution to utilization, the Kum Shing Group assists the city’s power utilities in achieving supply reliability of over 99.999%.

In the past, the firm was performing data set replication across four offsite locations with a legacy backup solution that was time consuming to operate. It was also not able to handle large data sets generated from the mass archiving of multimedia files, resulting in poor backup quality.

According to Jerry Wong, the firm’s IT manager: “One of our key goals is to accelerate the agility, resilience and security of data backup by migrating to Cloud technology. To ensure our corporate data and customer information are protected, we wanted to deploy a single solution to backup data from multiple sources: cloud, Microsoft 365, servers, physical machines, and virtual machines, and perform offsite replication.”

Focusing on business instead

The firmed wanted to focus more on the business roadmap instead of troubleshooting and worrying about increasing the efficiency and reliability of backups. The IT team therefore scoured solutions that would fit its corporate requirements.

The solution they chose is able to support their roadmap to integrate with other cloud technologies and Microsoft 365. Wong continued: “Using Commvault for backup and recovery is fast, secure and reliable.”

Since implementation, the solution has allowed the firm to achieve up to five times faster backup for data from multiple sources. Currently, with the backup and recovery solution, Kum Shing has increased archive copies without increasing backup duration, achieving an 88% deduplication ratio and reducing storage capacity by more than 190TB.

Said Tony Kwan, Sales Director Hong Kong, Commvault: “It is critical for businesses to minimize disruption and future proof their operations, especially during these unprecedented times. This drives us forward as we continue to support some of the world’s most advanced businesses to ensure that they have access to key data through business expansions, ransomware attacks and even the impact of natural disasters.”
